It is to the owner’s delight when his dog can fetch things he throws. Teaching a dog how to fetch is a fun and fulfilling experience both for the owner and the pet. The dog would be able to get the exercise it needs, and at the same time, it forms a special bond with its owner. This activity involves the owner standing in an area and throwing a ball to another area for the dog to retrieve.
Many dogs love to run after a ball and then give it back to the thrower. When it gets near the thrower, it would naughtily and playfully keep away. As a remedy, the owner should have more than one ball for him to throw if the dog runs away with the first ball.
When the dog gets the first ball and heads back towards its owner, the latter must instruct the dog to drop or let go of the ball. If the dog does not comply, the owner should then take out the other ball and play with it by himself by hurling it in the air. He must pretend that he is having a good time with the second ball until he gets the attention of his pet. The dog would drop the first ball and it would concentrate on the second ball. The owner should then show the second ball to the dog and then throw it.
This activity should be repeated every now and then until the dog finally goes back to the owner with the ball. With training and enough time, it would learn how to retrieve anything. Not only will the dog learn a new trick that is fun and adorable, it will also have great memories of spending quality time with its master.
